Dennis DeYoung: The Music of Styx
8-9:30
Dennis DeYoung is a founding member of the rock group Styx. The Chicago-based band originated in 1962 when 14 year old DeYoung and brothers John and Chuck Panozzo joined Dennis in the basement of his childhood home to form one of America’s most successful and enduring bands. Styx has sold over 35 million albums worldwide and DeYoung has written eight of their nine top ten singles. Styx was the only band to ever record four consecutive triple platinum albums.
For over four decades, DeYoung has been a singer, songwriter, keyboardist and record producer. He wrote and sang several classics including: Lady, Come Sail Away, Best of Times, Mr. Roboto, Show Me the Way, Desert Moon, Don’t Let It End, and the 1979 Peoples Choice Award winner, Babe. His singing talents have made his voice one of the most recognizable in the world. DeYoung has recorded 7 solo albums including Desert Moon, whose title track achieved Top Ten status. DeYoung continues to tour with his rock band around the world.
In 2007, DeYoung recorded his seventh solo album for DEP Universal Canada. The title track for this CD, One Hundred Years From Now was released as a single and reached #1 on the Pop, Rock and AC charts in Quebec. In 2008, this CD will be released in the The United States on Rounder Records and will feature two additional tracks. In May of 2008 DeYoung’s musical The Hunchback of Notre Dame will be staged in Chicago at the Bailiwick Repertory Theater.

DeYoung was also selected to perform live on VH1’s BIG IN 06 Awards show along with THE KILLERS, THE FRAY, FERGIE, and WEIRD AL.
In 2003, DeYoung performed and recorded an expanded version of his Rock Symphony show at the historic Chicago Theater. This CD, Dennis DeYoung and the Music of Styx Live with Symphony Orchestra, has been certified platinum in Canada.
In 2002, WTTW PBS Chicago taped DeYoung performing with his rock band and 50 piece symphony orchestra with The Chicago’s Children’s Choir for the pilot of the PBS’ Soundstage series. The Soundstage DVD, DENNIS DEYOUNG AND THE MUSIC OF STYX LIVE WITH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA has been certified triple platinum in Canada. Both the CD and DVD are available at www.dennisdeyoung.com.
In recent years DeYoung’s songs have continued to enjoy remarkable popularity. His compositions have been featured in over 30 television shows including: The Simpson’s, Freeks & Geeks, Dharma and Gregg, E.R., King of Queens, Sex in the City, Will and Grace, Las Vegas, Cold Case, That 70’s Show, Saturday Night Live and numerous others. The piece de resistance however was when Cartman sang Come Sail Away on the groundbreaking series South Park.
DeYoung’s songs have been featured in 15 major motion pictures including; Virgin Suicides, Big Daddy, Detroit Rock City, Disney’s Atlantis, and The Wild, The Karate Kid II, the Shrek II DVD, Mr. Woodcock, , Underdog and Fun With Dick and Jane etc. Four songs of DeYoung’s were used in The Perfect Man in which he also made a cameo appearance.
Volkswagen turned Mr. Roboto into a hit national commercial, featuring two Wayne’s World like guys jamming to the words “Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto.” In 1999, Hippo Records released The Ultimate Collection, a compilation of select songs from DeYoung’s solo albums Desert Moon, Back to the Word and Boomchild. In 2005, Universal Music Group re-released Desert Moon on CD and a DVD of DeYoung’s videos entitled, The Best Of Dennis DeYoung, The 20th Century Masters.
DeYoung made his Broadway debut in 1993, starring as Pontius Pilate in Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Jesus Christ Superstar’s 25th Anniversary Reunion Tour. His performance earned a Joseph Jefferson Award nomination for best supporting actor in a musical. While performing in Superstar, DeYoung was approached by Atlantic Records to sing and produce 10 On Broadway, a compilation of his favorite Broadway songs.
Deyoung’s passion for American musical theater and composers like George Gershwin and Lerner and Lowe inspired him to write a musical based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Nashville Tennessee Repertory Theater mounted a full production of Hunchback in the fall of 1997 to glowing reviews. In 2006 DeYoung received the Just Plain Folks Music Awards for Best Theater Album, The Hunchback of Notre Dame…A Musical, and for Best Contemporary Song, Who Will Love This Child.
DeYoung is a native of Chicago. In January of 2008 DeYoung will celebrate 38 years of marriage to his high school sweetheart Suzanne. He and Suzanne have raised two children and continue to live in the Chicago area.

The Samples
6:10-7:10
The Samples were a band formed in Boulder, Colorado in early 1987. The band’s name came from the members’ early sustenance of food samples from the local grocery store. The music has been described as “reggae influenced folk and rock/pop”. The founding members were Sean Kelly (Guitar/Vocals), Andy Sheldon (Bass/Vocals), Charles Hambleton (guitar),Jeep MacNichol (Drums/Vocals), and Al Laughlin (Keyboards, Vocals).
Their live shows helped them on the college circuit selling out venues in the 1990’s. Their records blended soulful pop sensibility with a mix of folk, reggae, jazz, and rock to create their own signature sound. They wrote songs about nature and the environment giving the band an “eco-friendly” reputation. The band headlined the H.O.R.D.E. tour shows in 1993 and 1996 and they shared the bill with Sting, The Allman Brothers Band, Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors Collective Soul Widespread Panic and Phish. On their own tours, many up and coming bands opened up for them including Dave Matthews Band, Tragically Hip, Hootie & the Blowfish, and Lisa Loeb. They have also appeared on The Jay Leno Show.

Alicia Witt
4:40-5:25
Currently, Alicia is in New York shooting The Boarding House, starring opposite Nick Stahl. Kate Cohen and Terry Leonard are producing this independent feature film, directed by Bruce van Dusen. Just prior to this Alicia was working on NBC’s 5th Season of Friday Night Lights in which she will be reprising her Season 4 role of ‘Cheryl’. The highly anticipated 5th Season will be airing this fall.
In addition to her acting work, Alicia is a singer/songwriter. Her self-titled first EP was released on iTunes in June 2009 and her music can be heard on www.myspace.com/aliciawittmusic. For the last two years, she has been performing her original music at numerous venues including Joe’s Pub in New York City and Hotel CafĂ© in Los Angeles. Witt and her band recently performed live on Craig Fergusons’ Late Late Show which aired the 1st of July.

Angie Stevens
3:35-4:20
For a singer/songwriter to stand out from the pack, they have to possess the kind of magical voice that makes a listener stop in their tracks and pay attention. Denver’s Angie Stevens has that kind of voice, and it’s drenched in Americana akin to Patty Griffin or EmmyLou Harris. Stevens also has the songwriting chops to match, as Westword Magazine recently named her Denver’s Best Singer/Songwriter. Now Stevens is back with her third and most powerful album to date, Queen of This Mess, released on Boss Koala Records and produced by Malcolm Burn.

Strange Americans
2:30-3:15
These five musical torrents searched long and hard across this vast land, or rather, Denver’s Craigslist, looking for a dining room set that matched the living room furniture. They also found the musician classifieds, and a plethora of ads seeking speed metal drummers and Def Leopard tribute band front men.
Murry, Matt, and Trent dug their heels in and contacted a few of the ads for furniture and a couple promising musicians too. 5 very awkward rendezvous, 8 months, and a couple “close calls” later; Scott and Trevor saddled up to round out this eclectic group.
An energetic vocal trio reminiscent of CSN coupled with a quintet of experienced multi-instrumentalists, Strange Americans don’t quiver at the chance to dig into the collective musical experience and write for the song. Holding accessibility as a musical and lyrical cornerstone, the band readily experiments with any and all potential rock, pop, folk, and country positions and musical parameters, creating a sound that is innovative and uniquely their own. Strange Americans are students of the craft and value striking a delicate balance of exploring the new while remaining rooted in our rich popular music tradition.

Skyline 2

Gin Blossoms
8-9:30
Fueled by mega-hits including “Hey Jealousy,” “Found Out About You” and “Til I Hear It From You,” Gin Blossoms completed the classic crossover from college-circuit heroes to multi-platinum album sellers.
The band’s hometown following in Tempe, Arizona grew quickly as the band earned a great reputation as a live act. Readers of the Phoenix New Times chose them as the city’s best rock band qualifying them to play at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas in March, 1989. Later that year, College Music Journal dubbed them the “Best Unsigned Band in America” and invited them to play MTV’s New Music Awards in New York City.
Major label interest quickly followed …their initial releases on A&M Records includedUp and Crumbling in 1991 and the multi-platinum selling New Miserable Experiencein 1992 featuring the single, “Hey Jealousy” which peaked at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Four more singles followed … “Mrs. Rita,” “Found Out About You,” “Allison Road” and “Until I Fall Away.” With NME having sold nearly 3 million copies in the US alone, the Gin Blossoms became a band to be reckoned with.
Congratulations I’m Sorry, which was released in 1996, was the Blossom’s final original album of the decade bringing them two more hits … “Follow You Down” which spent ten weeks in the Top Ten and “As Long As It Matters” which earned the group a Grammy nomination for “Best Performance by a Duo or Group.” The album debuted in Billboard’s Top Ten and a year of touring helped put the record past 1,500,000 units sold.

John Common
6:15-7:15
“John Common & Blinding Flashes of Light emerged through smoke dressed to kill in black and red. From the second they took the stage until the second they left it, they played with the sort of blind joy that will make you believe in whatever they’re doing — it’s pure passion and happiness.” – Westword
“John’s clever lyrics and perfectly crafted songs are outdone only by his huge and prolific body of work. This guy puts out a solid album twice a year. No wonder his songs are good.” – Denver Music Scene, Top Ten Singer-Songwriters
“Beautiful Empty showcases a songwriter of remarkable depth and maturity.” – Denver Post
“By the third song, I was a fan. By the fifth song, I wanted to join the band. The music was very nearly flawless. It was one of those “good for the soul” music moments for me.” – The Examiner
“Raw, yet sophisticated pop.” – The Onion

The Heyday
5:05-5:55
The Heyday formed in the spring of 2006, when singer-songwriter Randy Ramirez and pianist Jeff Appareti parted ways with their former Americana-roots project aptly-named “Like Chasing Wind.” Shortly after, guitarist Brian Martin and drummer Sean Bennett began sneaking away from their other bands to develop the Heyday’s sound in Appareti’s parents’ basement. Spring turned to summer, and Pete Wynn, a friend of Bennett, took over as bassist. The newly formed quintet decided to forego any live performances and write for the remainder of the summer, honing their soulful sound into an honest but radio-friendly new take on rock and roll.

Young Cities
3:55-4:45
Rising from the plains of the rocky mountains is Colorado’s own Young Cities. Playing almost one hundred live shows since 2007, and a having a brand new 5-song EP set for release, the four piece is poised for local and international appeal.
After playing music together for three years, front man Chance Scott-Burke and guitarist Tyler Briskie (formerly of Denver local band Lenore) started recording and demoing songs in late August of ‘07. Bassist James Morrison, after seeing great potential in the small project, joined a month later. Within weeks, Young Cities, under the name Hearts Like Lions, decided to put wheels on the project and start practicing for their first live show, in February of ‘08. One year of prolific writing and a 5-song demo later, the band decided the next step was to professionally record.
With a little luck, and some help from friends, the boys ended up at EastWest Studios in Los Angeles (i.e. Pet Sounds, Californication). In 5 days flat they produced an 11 song album and came back to Denver to finish mixing and mastering, and to finally release an album. In early 2010, the band changed their name to the present day Young Cities and the band released a short sample of the album named “Two songs.” Soon after the release of the sampler the guys were forced to put the release of the album on hold. With the addition of drummer Josh Ortega (formerly of Circle Takes the Square), Young Cities released their self-titled five song EP on November 5th of 2010.

Monroe Monroe
2:45-3:35
The concept of Monroe Monroe’s music began with the thematic reaction of one man’s long-term assignments in Antarctica. The isolation and months on end without seeing or feeling the warmth of the sun would bring most people to madness. Instead, Bella Abbatecolla found this lack of everything as the inspiration he needed to write an album’s worth of brilliant landscapes and bring his brand of anthemic indie rock back to North America.

Trevor Hall
8-9:30
Trevor Hall’s self-titled Vanguard debut embodies a soulfulness, depth and passion far beyond the artist’s 22 years. His youthful exterior belies the depth and intensity of an old soul. Trevor’s music is an unconventional mix of acoustic rock and reggae that serves as a vibrant landscape for his thought-provoking, inspiring lyrics. Produced by Marshall Altman (Matt Nathanson, Kate Voegele, Marc Broussard), Trevor Hall encompasses the entire cosmology of this one-of-a-kind young artist, from the opening “Internal Heights,” with its sitar-accented electro-groove, which recalls Peter Gabriel at his most expansive, to the meditative and intimate closer “Many Roads,” in which Trevor seems to be channeling his primary inspiration, Bob Marley. Indeed, “Many Roads” could stand as Trevor’s “One Love.” “We’ve heard there are many paths, but it turns out they all lead to the same place,” he says of the song’s ultimate point.
“These songs are not all where I’m at presently,” Trevor explains. “Many of them are where I aspire to be. With some of them, I feel like it’s somebody else talking to me. When I sing the line ‘Maintain internal heights,’ for example, people might think I’m talking to them, but I’m also telling myself to remember that. ‘Internal Heights’ came about because I have a lot of Rastafarian friends, and they’d always say ‘Maintain internal heights’ as a pick-me-up or a greeting. I really thought about that, because it’s the sum of everything, really, in my life: to try to maintain that internal place where you’re very light, very high on spirit. So I took that idea and went with it. The demo I recorded was very calming, but when I brought it in to Marshall, it went in this uptempo, rocking direction, which I hadn’t expected, but I love it in this form. It’s one of my favorite tracks on the record. It’s also the calling for the record. Every song points back to that one line: maintain internal heights.”
“Trevor’s musical perspective is really his emotional perspective,” says Altman. “Hope, positivity, persistence, faith, joy, love for his fellow man, kindness and a beautiful sense of reckless abandon all embody him as a person and as an artist. Musically, Trevor Hall spans several genres—soul, reggae, pop, electronica, folk—yet the record feels singular in its origin, really. It’s not a sum of its parts; it’s the sum of Trevor.”
He infuses his songs with a deep sense of spirituality, as evidenced in the lead single “Unity,” written and performed with his friend (Hasidic reggae artist) Matisyahu. The two artists were on tour together when news of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India hit the media. Trevor had made two trips to India, one a pilgrimage with two monks from a Southern California temple where he still lives, the second on his own in celebration of his 21st birthday. But the sectarian violence hit closer to home for Matisyahu, who knew some of those who’d been murdered in a synagogue that had been targeted by the terrorists.
“On the external level, it’s obviously about the unity of all beliefs,” Trevor says of the song. “We call it by many names but there’s only one truth. But on a much deeper, internal level, it’s about the mystical place in your own heart where all these things merge into one thing. So the song works on both levels. Matisyahu is Jewish, and here’s this incomprehensible incident that happened in India. So we were talking about it, reading about it and meditating about it and writing lyrics back and forth. And the last night of the tour, I’d just come up with the chorus to the song and was playing it in my dressing room. His dressing room was right next door, and when he heard me singing the part—’I just wanna melt away in all Its grace, drift away to that sacred place where there’s no more you and me, no more they and we, just unity’—he came in and jokingly said, ‘Where’d that come from?’”
The album contains one captivating song after another. “The Lime Tree,” a serene ballad that has become a fan favorite, features a guest vocal from Trevor’s friend Colbie Caillat, while “Where’s the Love” marries a buoyant midtempo groove to a call for people to cast away the prejudices that divide them and come together in a global community. At the other extreme is the blazing rocker “Volume,” which turns out to be about meditation. “Sometimes when you’re playing music, there’s a silence in the sound,” he points out. “Even when it’s externally really loud, internally it’s very still.” The summery, easy-going “31 Flavors” is the closest thing here to a traditional love song. “It was inspired by an old crush,” he says. “I used that juice to write it.”
Trevor spent his first 16 years in Hilton Head, S.C., and started playing music early on, with his parents’ encouragement and support. “My dad was a drummer and a musician himself,” he points out. “For my 15th or 16th birthday, my dad got me some time in his friend’s recording studio. I made my first record, which was mostly sold to my friends and family. In 10th grade, Trevor headed to California to attend the Idyllwild School for the Arts, an international boarding school in the mountains east of Los Angeles, to study classical guitar. Trevor soaked up everything in this rich new environment. “I was craving a higher taste, and the food was there for me,” he says.
Before graduating from high school, he was signed to a record deal with a major label. The companywent through a reorganization and only released a sampler EP. Trevor who had already toured extensively with many artists including Steel Pulse, Rusted Root, Matisyahu, Colbie Caillat, Stevie Nicks, Ziggy Marley and Keb Mo, never stopped touring. He also never stopped writing and during this period he wrote some of his best work. After being released from his contract, Trevor and his touring percussionist / drummer, Chris Steele, recorded 14 of these new songs, and self-released the resulting album, which he titled This Is Blue and an accompanying live album entitled Alive & On The Road. “It was a wonderful, liberating experience,” he recalls.
Not long afterward, Trevor brought his acoustic guitar to the Vanguard offices in Santa Monica and played some of his new songs for the staff. It was love at first sight…and first listen. “I really liked the vibe there,” he says. “It was so different from what I’d experienced.” So Trevor signed with Vanguard, and label head Kevin Welk suggested he check out Altman. They decided to work together, and Altman helped him shape the material into its present form. “Marshall was able to take what I had and make it more accessible,” says Trevor.
It’s fair to say that every one of these dozen tracks conveys a message, but Trevor’s only agenda is the desire to express the sheer joy of being alive and on a journey toward wisdom. The message of “Sing the Song,” in which jubilation is cranked up to 11, could represent the album as a whole. Trevor describes the lyric as a call to “Wake up, join in and celebrate. It’s a song of life.” So are they all.
Hall’s previous recordings have appeared in numerous films and television shows including his recording, “Other Ways,” which was in the Shrek the Third feature and soundtrack. Trevor also covered the Band’s “Life is a Carnival” for the star-studded tribute album, Endless Highway: The Music of the Band.

Something Underground
6:10-7:25
The heart of Something Underground has its roots buried deep in
family soil. The front men, Seth and Josh Larson, draw their thick-as-blood harmonies from rich family traditions of singing as a way of bringing people together. Their on-stage brotherly antics entertain and invite audiences to join in the family fun. Their soul is felt with every confident wide-open lyric belted by both Seth and Josh, which has led some to liken their sound to a cross between Simon and Garfunkel and Led Zeppelin. With the addition of Trevor Mariotti on drums, Something Underground delivers high-energy rock & roll with the raw intensity that only this power trio can bring.

Boulder Acoustic Society
4:45-5:50
BAS’ music is haunted by the past and focused on the future.
It’s indie-folk that draws from Appalachian roots, gritty gospel and the contemporary urban soundscapes. BAS merges tradition with innovation, producing a unique sound and an unforgettable live entertainment experience.
Five years, five albums and relentless touring have honed Boulder Acoustic Society into one of tightest and most entertaining bands of any genre. The pulsing percussion and thumping bass of Scott Aller and Neil McCormick support the dual lead vocals of multi-instrumentalists Scott McCormick and Aaron Keim.

Mindless Behavior
3:55-4:35
Mindless Behavior is a dynamic group of young men armed with limitless talent, drive, energy and a fearless passion for music and performing. Barely into their teens, has the quartet’s energetic fusion of pop, hip hop, and R&B quite simply had the potential to transform the entire musical landscape as we know it.
Comprised of four spirited 13 year old boys – Prodigy, Roc Royal, Ray Ray and Princeton – Mindless Behavior employs an insane sleek and futuristic fashion style, epic dance moves, and global-ready pop songs. Their sound resonates with lush harmonies and messages that speak to listeners of all ages.
Prodigy was named after his ability to quickly master all new things related to dancing and playing music. Ray Ray came up under the ranks of famed Los Angeles battle dancer Tommy The Clown. Roc Royal, who began rapping at eight years old, also honed his skills in dance crews. And Princeton got his start at the age of four, appearing in television commercials for Skechers, McDonalds and Nike, as well as music videos.
The showstoppers deliver high levels of energy during their sets, singing, rapping and dancing with stage presence comparable to the greats. Teen girls, in particular, went wild when the guys hit the stage for their tour of Los Angeles high schools and opening sets with the Backstreet Boys (This Is Us 2010) and Justin Bieber (Pop-con 2010).
Their movement is redefining the word mindless and sending a powerful, much needed message to youth. Mindless Behavior is a new, effortless way of thinking that promotes individuality. “If you’re confident and not afraid to stand out, you’re mindless. If you get good grades in school, you’re mindless. If you express yourself, you’re mindless.” commented the group.
The music supports their message and the mindless lifestyle. Mindless Behavior’s forthcoming album, #1 Girl, takes on teenage love in explosive party records, fun mid-tempos, and introspective ballads. The album’s first single “My Girl” is a bubbling, infectious track produced by Walter Millsap (BeyoncĂ©, Timbaland). “The song is about how much our girl loves us – she texts us all the time, sending us a 1-4-3,” said Princeton. The driving energy of “Ms. Right” heats up the dance floors with another offering from Millsap, who also produced standout “1st Crush.” On the piano-driven ballad “Future,” the young romantics envision all that they’ll be able to do take care of their girls once they’re old enough. They team up with superstar producer Polow Da Don for “I Love You.”
The Conjunction Productions team and Streamline Records head Vincent Herbert came up with the concept of the group in 2008, and Mindless Behavior was formed at a Los Angeles based audition hosted by Conjunction, a teaming of Walter Millsap, Keisha Gamble, songwriter Goldie Hampton and choreographer David Scott. (Gamble and Scott helped discover B2K.) Prodigy, Princeton, Roc, and Ray Ray were immediately picked after displaying their talents. After two years of artist development, Herbert, who also discovered Lady Gaga and has executive-produced all of her music, introduced Mindless Behavior to IGA Chairman Jimmy Iovine, who immediately confirmed the deal.
Even though the members of Mindless Behavior are only 13, their sound is universal and appeals to the masses. “I think everyone can relate to our songs,” Princeton said. “It’s either a ten year old boy looking for ‘Ms. Right’ or a 60 year old man looking for ‘Mrs. Right.’”
Prepare for Mindless Behavior to join the ranks of the legendary young male groups that preceded them—The Jackson 5, New Edition, N’Sync, and B2K.

The Give
2:30-3:15
In the fall of 2010, Denver philanthropist Libby Anschutz Brown began assembling a group of her friends to practice music together and play on the weekends. These musical jam sessions inspired her to form a band, and given her philanthropic nature, the band was formed with a mission to share music by “Giving Back” within the Denver community. In early 2011, The Give was launched.

Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band
8-9:30
Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band have been rockin’ the party scene worldwide with their style of “high energy, swamp funky zydeco” for the last twenty years. Chubby, being a third generation zydeco musician, formed his band in January 1989. Getting his inspiration from the musical greats, such as Clifton Chenier, BB King, Bobby Blue Bland, Ray Charles, and adding a good dose of 70’s funk, his music became a blend of what he now refers to as ” high energy, swamp funky zydeco”. Chubby has taken his style of music worldwide playing at venues such as The Chicago Blues Festival, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Utrecht Blues Festival in Amsterdam, Winthrop Jazz & Blues Festival, Fremont Street Experience Las Vegas, Cajun & Zydeco Festival Ft Lauderdale FL, and the Bourbon Street Jazz Festival in Sao Paulo Brazil, to name a few. He has shared the stage with great musician’s such as Santana, BB King, Eddie Money, Buddy Guy, Travis Tritt, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Taj Mahal, Morris Day & the Time, Confunkshun, and Weird Al Yankovic. Chubby was one of the main characters along with Tab Benoit, Amanda Shaw, and Alan Toussaint, in the IMAX film “Hurricane on the Bayou” in 2006. He has pioneered the “Chubby Party Cruise” that is a seven day festival on the water. And he is sponsored by Louisiana Hot Sauce. If you like Robert Randolph, Buckwheat Zydeco, or Rockin Dopsie Jr., you’re going to love Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band.

Dwayne Dopsie & The Zydeco Hellraisers
6:15-7:15
Within every genre of music there is a special artist who comes along but once in a Blue Moon to bring that genre into a new generation. It is quite possible that Dwayne Dopsie is this special artist. The youngest son of the late King of Zydeco, Rockin’ Dopsie, Dwayne has big shoes to fill and is doing it in grandiose fashion. Coming from such a serious musical heritage can often be intimidating, but with one foot firmly planted in his family tradition and the other in innovation, Dwayne has accepted the challenge and continues to be the innovator in a traditional music.

Bop Skizzum
4:55-5:55
Since it’s founding more than ten years ago Bop Skizzum has always taken pleasure in concocting songs that enable you to blow off some steam by getting on the floor and burning it up. Screaming horn lines, block-rocking beats, and lyrics squarely stamped with Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” seal of approval all point to one thing: Bop Skizzum’s mission is to make you dance.
Comprised of Andy “ROK” Guerrero, Serafin Sanchez, Erin Jo Harris, and a rotating cast of the best musicians known to science, Bop Skizzum is all about making booty-shaking music in accordance with the founding fathers and mothers of funk. From the sweat-inducing grooves of James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, the visionary jazz-soaked R&B of Stevie Wonder, the explosive pop of Prince and Michael Jackson, to the modern retro soul of Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and Janelle MonĂ¡e. Bop Skizzum is following in these big footsteps to get your motor running any and every way it knows how.
Bop Skizzum was formed in 2000 by funk-lovers Andy ROK, best known as the founding member and guitarist from the socio-political hip-hop rock group Flobots, and his friend, saxophone wielding sex symbol Serafin Sanchez who graduated from The University of Colorado at Boulder with a master’s degree in Jazz music. NYU-trained soul-singing bombshell Erin Jo Harris was invited by ROK and Sanchez to join the duo in late 2009, and the freshly-minted trio started churning out songs like hot cakes. They enlisted the most bad-ass rhythm and brass sections available: tone master Chris Harris on bass and beat savant Tohbias Juniel on drums, along with two-man trumpet power punch Joe Ferrone and John Lake, and all headed deep into the studio to unearth their new signature sound.

The Congress
3:35-4:35
Hot on the heels of a very successful first year of touring, The Congress is showing no signs of slowing down in 2011. The Denver-based rock band will continue to tour from coast to coast, starting with three weeks in the southeast and a feature performance at this year’s Wakarusa Festival. Having successfully toured in over sixty markets in six months, it is clear that The Congress is turning heads and making an impact with their boundless energy and unique brand of original rock and roll.

K.J. Denhert
2:30-3:15
KJ’s performances will move you to laugh, to dance and even to cry. Her special blend of urban folk & jazz has earned her four Independent Music Award nominations and in ‘09, she was named as one of Jazz.com’s top female vocalists. She’s appeared at scores of festivals and has residencies at the ‘55 Bar’, Smoke in NYC, at the Baz Bar in St. Barth’s, and the prestigious Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy. Her very latest, “Album No.9″, a collection of 60’s jazz, pop and rock standards is set for release on Motema Music in Europe & the US in the fall 2010. Consistently praised for her pathos, originality and impeccable musicianship, KJ is a one of a kind songwriter, guitarist and performer, not to be missed.
KJ, born Karen Jeannne to parents from the island of Grenada, was the first US citizen born to a small family. Her only brother, born in Aruba, had taken an interest in music and it was on one of his discarded guitars that KJ wrote her first song. “I picked up a guitar when I was ten and immediately I started writing music,” she recalls. “I loved Sergio Mendes’ songs, liked John Hartford on the Glenn Campbell Show and really got into James Taylor and Joni Mitchell, who I still consider my two main influences. I also loved other singer-songwriters of the time including Carole King and Laura Nyro and later fell in love with Steely Dan’s music, and just about wore out my LP of Hubert Laws’ Rite Of Spring. I was completely self-taught, by listening to records and playing them over and over, teaching myself tablature from a great James Taylor book and modal tunings from Joni Mitchell’s For The Roses song book. I didn’t really do much but play guitar through my teenage years.”
In the 1980s, KJ toured for six years as the lead guitarist and occasional vocalist with an all-female band called Fire, playing rock and top-40 music throughout the US, Canada and Europe. After the group ran its course, she worked at a day job while continuing to write and play music. While working in Cleveland as a financial analyst, she started the Mother Cyclone label and made her first recording. Moving home to New York in 1997, she formed the NY Unit, a group that she still performs with. “I look for players who have an ability to groove and have lots of drama in their playing.”
In addition to running her own band and Mother Cyclone label, KJ has been named among the six winners of the Kerrville New Folk Song contest in June 2006 for “Private Angel” and won the Mountain Stage New Song contest in August 05 for “Little Mary.” Another Year Gone By, Live won the 2006 Independent Music Award for Best Live Performance.

Welton

Oakhurst
8-9:30
Oakhurst is a Denver-based international act with deep Appalachian roots and original songs that fuse traditional bluegrass with indie-rock and a citybilly attitude. The band’s sound is more rustic and rocking, and less jazzy and jammed, than the typical hybrid bluegrass found in the Rocky Mountain region. Oakhurst’s unpretentious, go-for-it interpretation of Bluegrass and its road hardened sound has taken them far beyond the boundaries of Colorado. The Quartet has played everything from major festivals to City sponsored events… from floating festivals in the Caribbean to private parties on mountain tops… from bluegrass festivals in the Appalachians to Chateaus in the Champagne region of France.
The band’s latest album, Jump in the Get Down, received airplay on over 200 radio stations nationwide. The spins not only earned the quintet spots on the Americana, Bluegrass and Jamband charts, but an even larger national following. That hybridized, hard-to-categorize sound has also gotten Oakhurst nominated by Denver’s Westword Magazine 5 years straight as the best band in 4 different categories. Oakhurst captured the “Best Bluegrass Band” honor against stiff competition & earned the independent artist of the year award by Mile High Music Store as well.

Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers
5:45-7:15
Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers have not only redefined what mainstream radio would have the public believe is “popular,” but they have rewritten the rules on how songs are written and albums are made. Sticking to their credo of art leading commerce, RCPM have consistently produced nothing but uncompromised, unadulterated, pure rock-n-roll for over a decade.
In the mid-90’s amidst the Seattle grunge sound, Clyne and drummer PH Naffah made rock fun with their witty, irreverent lyrics and blazing guitar licks as half of the seminal Tempe-based band The Refreshments. The “Freshies” released two albums including the 1996 cult-classic, Fizzy, Fuzzy, Big and Buzzy which produced the modern rock hits “Banditos” and “Down Together.” The Refreshments also wrote the theme for TV’s King of the Hill.

The Railbenders
4:15-5:15
They’ve been called “country”, “alt-country”, and “outlaw country”, but the phrase that might best describe the Railbenders is “hard country.” This Denver, Colorado band plays unabashed, straight-no-chaser music that pulls no punches and offers no apologies for the love of some of the finer things in life: whiskey, women, song, and good timin’ friends. While their songs are soaked in traditional country influence, their various rock and punk backgrounds give them a jagged edge appeal. Their music and dynamic live shows have made them one of the top draws in Colorado, bringing in a diverse fan base of all ages.
Formed in 2000 by Jim Dalton (vocals, guitar) and Tyson Murray (upright bass), the Railbenders took a mutual love of Johnny Cash, Waylon, Hank Williams, rock ‘n’ roll, punk, whiskey, and threw it all together to create their own sound. Powered by the steady rollin’ drums of Graham Haworth and the blazing guitar picking of Tony Nascar (“The Fastest Guitar in the West”), the band has garnered local awards, including “Top Country Band” by the Rocky Mountain News (2004 & 2005), and “Best Country/Roots Band” five years in a row (2002 to 2006) in the annual Westword Music Showcase.
With their unique brand of music, The Railbenders have gained fans within the country community – they’ve opened for Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, Charlie Daniels, and David Allan Coe. In 2007, they were invited to play Stagecoach in Indio, CA, where they opened a stage that featured Emmylou Harris, Kris Kristofferson, Junior Brown, John Doe, Drive-By Truckers, and Alejandro Escovedo. They’ve made friends with acclaimed country and rock musicians like Jesse Dayton and Eddie Spaghetti (of Supersuckers fame), who were both so impressed with the Railbenders, they’ve both appeared on their CD’s – Jesse lays down the lead guitar on “Black Rose” from 2006’s Showdown, and Eddie lends his pipes on two tracks on 2004’s Segundo. Johnny Hickman of Cracker, who is a frequent special guest guitarist, says, “I know all of their songs, I’m a fan.”
The Railbenders won a sponsorship from Coors in 2004, a relationship that continues today. Their music has been featured on shows such as A&E’s “Rollergirls” television series. Altitude Sports & Entertainment Network (Comcast) produced a show on the band that earned them exposure throughout the Midwestern states. Current airplay on XM Radio’s “X-Country” channel is giving the band exposure to a nationwide audience.

The Hollyfelds
3-3:55
Once there was a grown man who lived in a closet.
Well, it wasn’t a real closet. He only used the closet as a secret entrance to his underground lair of steam tunnels where he was able to pursue his interests in math and science with no interruption from the outside world.
And he wasn’t a real man, only a character in the 80’s teen movie “Real Genius.”
What is real is that more than 20 years after the film was released, a band in Denver would name themselves after this memorable character. His name was Hollyfeld… Lazlo Hollyfeld.
Lazlo’s Denver descendants, calling themselves The Hollyfelds, departed from the musical style of the 80’s film from where they took their name, and instead went for a more traditional sound. The Hollyfelds take classic country, rock, and pop, put it in a pot, add a touch of folk and bluegrass, and baby, they got a stew going. It is music that, as Westword magazine puts it, “splits the difference between alt-country and the genre’s mainstream,” and contains “just enough of the whiskey and heartache that makes great country music.”
